From Pop See Cul
pop.see.cul: Can you tell us a bit about your background?
Joanna Halpin: Sure, I am from England and I grew up in a Cornwall with my lovely family. After school and college I went to an amazing art university (still in Cornwall) called University College Falmouth where I studied Graphic Design for three years. It was after finishing that I decided to move to London and ‘try’ being a model. I got taken on by an amazing agency and here I am! I am now based in London and live in a tiny little flat with my boyfriend.
pop.see.cul: Did you always wanted to be a model?
Joanna Halpin: Yes, It had always been my ‘dream job’ so I am so grateful that I am getting the chance to actually do it.
pop.see.cul: What are the best/worst moments of your modelling career so far?
Joanna Halpin: The best moments are definitely the excitement I feel when I find out I booked a job or am getting the chance to travel to somewhere new and exciting. I recently got the chance to go to New Mexico and shoot in White Sands National Park I with a camel so that was pretty cool and not your standard day. With modeling you also get the chance to meet and work with so many different amazing people, some of the people I’ve met on jobs have become really good friend. For me one of the worst parts is never being able to really plan anything, I’m usually a really organized person and with modeling it’s all so last minuet and stuff always pops up that plans get cancelled and everything gets changed. So it’s been hard for me to try and adapt to someone who doesn’t make plans and can’t organize everything so far in advance.
pop.see.cul: Which photographer would you like to work with one day?
Joanna Halpin: Mario Testino. I think I would do pretty well if I got a job with him.
pop.see.cul: From afar, people might see modeling as such a fun career , traveling and wearing gorgeous clothes all the time. What are your thoughts on this?
Joanna Halpin: I think that superficially that is true, it is fun, traveling is awesome and being dressed up in pretty clothes is most girls dream but there is of course the other side too. Traveling means leaving my friends and boyfriend behind for sometimes months at a time which I find really hard. Also lots of traveling means hours and hours of delays, sitting in airports alone and being bored out of my mind. But I still love it and wouldn’t want to be doing anything else so I know I’m super lucky and am not going to complain.
pop.see.cul: What is your typical day like?
Joanna Halpin: I wake up, make a cup of coffee right away. Then if I’m working the call time is usually around 9am so I’ll get ready and find my way there. Work until about 5pm and then have the evening to see my boyfriend or friends. Normally I’ll just stay in and watch a movie or a couple of episodes of a TV show we are watching and eat and drink tea. Ooh what an exciting life I lead…
pop.see.cul: If you had a chance to meet anyone in the world, who would it be and what would you ask him/her?
Joanna Halpin: I would love to meet David Attenborough, he is my hero. There isn’t anything specific I want to ask him, I’d just love to have the chance to talk to him about all his animal experiences and listen to his soothing voice.
pop.see.cul: What would you be doing right now if you weren’t answering our interview questions?
Joanna Halpin: I have a day off today so I would be lounging around, watching crappy tv and drinking coffee.
pop.see.cul: Favourite food?
Joanna Halpin: Italian cuisine, gelato, pizza and pasta.
pop.see.cul: Favourite music?
Joanna Halpin: I pretty much like everything and listen to different stuff depending what I’m doing and my mood. But at home my boyfriend has a vinyl player and his vinyl collection is stuff like Bright Eyes, Band of Horse, Fleetwood Mac, The Shins, Ryan Adams so most of the time I listen to music like that.
pop.see.cul: Favourite movie?
Joanna Halpin: I don’t know, maybe Titanic… Anything with a young Leo in it is good for me.
pop.see.cul: Favourite city?
Joanna Halpin: London. But that might be because it’s ‘home’.
pop.see.cul: Our previous interviewee Alice Alva would like to know : If you had to redesign your country’s flag, what would it look like?
Joanna Halpin: Oooo hard question, I really don’t know and I actually really like Great Britain’s flag as it is, I’ve always felt we have a good flag!
pop.see.cul: What would you like to ask our next guest on pop.asks.you?
Joanna Halpin: If you were an animal what you be and why? And don’t just say your favourite cute animal, I want and honest answer that reflects your character!
